QSI Shenyang's elementary program is designed to nurture student’s curiosity and motivation in their learning while supporting the mastery learning approach in gaining content proficiency. We strive to develop the whole child by engaging students in core subjects (reading, writing, mathematics, science and cultural studies) and special subjects (art, library, music, physical education, technology, and Languages Other than English). Each QSI school will modify the course offerings according to local needs and requirements. Some schools may offer further courses to be made available through the QSI Distance Learning Program.

Success Orientations

QSI Shenyang believes that the Success Orientations are an integral part of every student’s day and are shown through the following:

Responsibility: Being prepared and on time

Concern for others: Remembering that they are a part of a community and their actions affect those around them.

Kindness and Politeness: Using polite language, tone and behavior.

Aesthetic Appreciation: Noticing and appreciating the beauty around them, both inside and outside of the school.

Trustworthiness: Being honest and forthright

Group interaction: Understanding how to relate to their classmates in a positive way.

Independent Endeavor: Doing their best, especially in the face of a challenge.

Recognition for success in these seven orientations is given five times during the school year on status reports.

Student Services

Intensive English

Every QSI student has the opportunity to be successful in their learning, and students are expected to flourish in their classrooms. However, a student whose English proficiency level is below that commonly associated with their age may not be able to flourish in the mainstream classroom. The Intensive English program is designed for these students. The goal of the Intensive English program is to facilitate an accelerated learning environment in which students are able to acquire the English language skills in the four domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing to be successful in their age-appropriate mainstream classes. Intensive English classes are smaller than mainstream classes to allow teachers to target individual student needs more effectively. The Intensive English program allows students to be successful at school and feel confident as learners.

Counseling

Learning Support

QSI Shenyang works with our regional Learning Support Coordinator to provide additional learning support to those identified with special educational needs. Staff work to implement recommended accommodations to their learning environments in order to be successful, and, when deemed necessary by the individual student’s needs, modifications to the curriculum. The school strives to do our best to provide the full conditions for all students, including those with special needs, to be successful in the QSI environment.

Extracurricular Activities

After School Activities (ASA) Program for Elementary Students

Education has two sides, the curricular and the extracurricular. Both are important. Students need a wide range of interests and activities. QSI Shenyang encourages its students to become involved in extracurricular activities. Four days each week the school encourages students to be involved in after school activities or safety netting (retesting or other academic make up work). Some activities are organized and sponsored by school personnel - sewing, jewelry making, outdoor sports and gardening are examples of this. Other activities may be organized by students, parents, or teachers who have special interests.

After School Activities (ASA) are provided for students three days each school week. Each teacher and paraprofessional normally sponsors one activity per week. This may vary somewhat depending on the teaching load of the teacher. Both teacher and student interests are taken into account when the activity schedule is made each term. If teachers elect to take an activity, they are expected to meet each time the activity is held.

Parents and members of the community who have skills that can be shared with students are encouraged to become involved in the activity program. Activities vary from term to term.

External Vendors

To enhance the school’s extra-curricular activities program, the school employs several external vendors. These include paid coaches for piano, Africa drumming, yoga etc..

ASAs are offered from Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
